Balay Dako by Antonio’s
A well-known restaurant in Tagaytay that proudly serves authentic Filipino comfort food. It is run by Chef Tony Boy Escalante, owner of Antonios Group of Restaurants. This place is a must-try when visiting Tagaytay City for food and relaxation. Aside from The food, the picturesque Taal Volcano is one of the reasons for a jam-packed dining area during the weekend.
A few months ago, before the pandemic, we visited the Balay Dako by Antonio’s for lunch after we attended a Catholic mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Church. It is located within the neighborhood and a few minutes’ drive from the church.
Outside the house is a big garden, also a parking area. Take note that parking spaces are always full during the weekend and at lunchtime. We arrived at the restaurant at about 1 PM, that is why we were able to find parking space since many customers were already left.
The receiving area is airy and welcoming. At the reception, we booked a table and waited for about 15 minutes. One of the staff accompanied us to the 3rd floor of the dining area.
It is at the rooftop where we got our table. It offers an indoor and outdoor seating space, with a generous display of plants, and where the best of view of Taal Volcano and Lake can be enjoyed. The ambiance is very relaxing, peaceful, and refreshing because of the weather.
Food we tried:
Lumpiang Shanghai is a Filipino-Chinese dish that is deep-fried spring rolls of ground pork and finely-minced vegetables. Serving sizes here is not the usual bite-sized appetizer. They made it bigger, like the size of Lumpiang toge. The savory flavor burst in the mouth, especially when dipped in sweet chili sauce.
Fried Hito with Mutasa, eggplant, and burong hipon -A whole piece of fried catfish with vegetable and burong hipon (sauce of fermented rice and baby shrimp) on the side reminds of our visit in Pampanga. This dish tastes good though the eggplant was too soggy that made the dish unappealing to eat. The fish was perfectly fried, crispy on the outside yet soft and flavorful on the inside. The burong hipon complimented well with the fried hito.
Ginataang Puso ng saging Banana flower bud cooked in coconut milk is also flavorful. It tasted just the way your mother cooked it. However, I did not like the vegetable because it is not as tender as I expected it to be.
Inihaw na Liempo is a grilled marinated pork belly. This mouthwatering dish is my daughter’s favorite. The meat was very tender and juicy, filled with a combination of smokey, tangy, and sweet flavors. It goes very well with the atsara, a pickled grated unripe papaya.
Seafood Paella consists of rice, squid rings, mussels, shrimp, and vegetables that are served in a small paella pan. I was surprised that Lechon kawali pieces were also in the pan. The rice was creamy and savory, while the calamari and other seafood were tender. The Lechon pieces give it an extra flavor. The food presentation was great.
And for the dessert, we had Cafe Americano, Green Mango Juice, and Brown Boba Milk tea. The coffee has a strong aroma flavor. It goes perfectly with the cool breeze of Tagaytay while the Green Mango Juice has a sweet-tangy flavor. The Milk tea for me is too sweet, and the tapioca pearls are not as gooey as the ones I have tasted in other popular milk tea shops.
